Better Together Scholarship

The Better Together Scholarship

The Better Together Scholarship is a program designed to empower aspiring young leaders in the mountains. It is in honour of Andrew Abel and Nathaniel Johnson, two leaders of the Central Alberta climbing community who were tragically killed in an avalanche in the spring of 2021. They exemplified the spirit of being “Better Together” by striving for adventure outside and leading others to do the same. The successful candidate will receive full funding of the Alpine Leadership Week, in partnership with Girth Hitch Guiding.

Candidate selection

The scholarship will be awarded up to once per year to a candidate who shows the community minded, adventure driven spirit that was seen by all who knew Andrew and Nate. The successful candidate should demonstrate a consistent commitment to the climbing community in Central Alberta, along with a clear desire to grow in technical skills and leadership.

Candidates are asked to submit a written application emailed to kurtis@trailheadclimbing.ca outlining their climbing experience, community involvement, and how they seek to embody the “Better Together” spirit. Applications are open year-round, and up to one successful candidate will be awarded each year. Decisions will be made for each year by March 31st.
