Trailhead Tales pt. 1

About the Author:

Mark loves the outdoors and the perspective it provides for us in our daily lives. His introduction to climbing came in his late thirties when he worked at Mountain Equipment Co-op and took advantage of the staff training program. His first climb was on ice, then rock, and eventually he started indoor gym climbing. He finds climbing not only brings insight to his life but also a sense of community. Sharing these experiences is a privilege. He hopes you’ll want to share your climbing tales here too.

Our new blog.

Our gym is special. It has a sense of community that you don’t find everywhere.

It started the first time I walked in the door, with my friend Miguel. Right away I noticed how the staff all knew his name, but he knew many of the people climbing too.

It didn’t take too long to realize this is what Trailhead is all about. Later in my staff training I discovered knowing all the names of the gym members is a priority. It’s an intention.

Whether we admit it or not, hearing our name is rewarding. It’s especially  gratifying when we are being greeted at the door, and the staff genuinely want to help. That example has a ripple effect and it gives the gym members permission to take an interest in others too.

It’s the difference between, ‘the climbing gym’ and ‘my climbing gym’.

Celebrating the Stories of Our Community

We want to celebrate that sense of community so we’re creating this blog.

When you think of everyone who’s climbed here over the last seven years there are lots of stories. Kids who learned how to climb here are now young adults continuing their climbing journeys both indoor and outdoors. Married couples have met here. Epic trips. International climbing destinations. Sadly, lost friends.

These are all stories worth telling, but they aren’t the only subjects worth writing about. Whatever you want to contribute is fair game. It could be gear tips, trip stories, how to articles, photos, poetry, even art. The sky’s the limit.

Your Turn: Share Your Story

Now it’s your turn. What inspires you? What trip always makes you smile when you think of it? What are you training for?

Every six months we’ll host a vote for the best entry and that person will win a $50 gift certificate.

Come and be part of the community!
